Here is a promo video you will be interested in. It contains some of the images from the book I have recently illustrated for two very talented authors, Leanne Hardinge and Ian wynne and explains its theme.
After you have viewed the short video, I will describe the illustration process we used and answer a couple of questions that may occur to you. There is also an "insert" video that will reveal Leanne's passion, the basis for the book. After all, her business is called, "Passions n Profits". Enjoy and come back:
It was a great experience and a fun project, achieved smoothly thanks to the use of today's digital tools.
I was presented with a draft script and detailed ideas for the drawings, simplifying things by my not having to figure out which content to select for illustration. The ideas fitted the script so well, there was no conflict over either the choice nor the image concept.
The book starts with a drawing of the character, a Frilled-neck Lizard we called "Frilly", designing him being my first task. After that, each page illustration was tackled in sequence. A rough sketch of each was emailed to both authors and approved before the next rough was drawn. Leanne and Ian, the "Team", lost no time in responding to my roughs with practical and truthful reactions, most of those positive. Here and there, we traded suggestions for changes in the ideas and compositions, etc. and the project continued smoothly.
When all the roughs were completed and approved, the final drawings were done, again in sequence. As an "old-time" artist (let's face it) with limited experience with digital drawing, I chose to use pencil and ink on paper throughout, scanning roughs and Finals for emailing. All drawings were required in black and white, without colour, so there was no need to employ digital colouring -Talk about a spoilt B & W artist!!
After a layoff in my art activities over the past few years, it did take a couple of weeks for my speed to return. The 22 page illustrations from character design to roughs and Finals, took me two months - but that's not bad for a "retired" oldie entrapped in "retirement" lifestyle and starved of time for drawing !
Leanne and Ian are great to work with. Both have a great sense of humour. Ian's wit is sharp and funny and both have more patience than they thought they could muster before engaging me! Great fun!
Hey, if you know anybody who can use the book, in either print or digital form, please let them know or maybe buy a copy for them. Thanks!!
